Projects undertaken (in reverse chronological order)
Working as an Automation Engineer with Loops Automation,Dubai from September2003,a system Integrator for Automation of ABB,Honeywell,Modicon & Eurotherm DCS & PLC System .
1. Automation of LPG Reverse Flow Control systems, South Gas Company, Iraq.(February 2004 till date.) :The project is Reverse Flow control system with three Modicon Quantum PLC for each area such as Propane, Butane and Main area and an ESD for Plant shutdown, which is also Modicon Quantum PLC, connected in a common Modbus Plus Network. The HMI for the plant is done using Vijeolook.
  • Design of control logic using Functional Block Diagrams, Structured Text and graphics as per system requirement.
  • Programming (development of drivers) of user-defined interfaces between Modicon Systems and Net Oil Computer using MODBUS protocol.
2. Automation of three Pipeline Pumping Station, Sudanase Petroleum Pipeline Corporation, Sudan.(June 2002 to August 2002) :The project involves automating three Pumping Station.Each station is provided with Eurotherm T940 controllers with MTL 8000 series I/O’s and the graphics interface is done using Wondareware.
  • Design & Developed the GSD file for MTL profibus slave modules to communicate with Eurotherm T940 controllers.
  • Design of control logic using Functional Block Diagrams, Structured Text and graphics as per system requirement.
  • Developed an Excel based Reports for Daily and Hourly basis using DDE server as per customers requirement.
3. ESD & Fire and Gas System for Offshore Platform, Total Abu Al Bukhoosh, Abu Dubai, U.A.E.(June 2002 to August 2002) :This project involves supply of two Modicon Quantum PLC one for ESD and another for Fire & Gas system.
  • Design of ESD logic using Functional Block, Structured Text as per the customer’s cause & effect diagram.
  • Testing of Gas detectors, Smoke detectors and UV&IR detectors with the PLC.
4. Automation of Field Processing Facility, Greater Nile Petroleum Corporation Limited, Sudan.(June 2002 to August 2002) :This project involves ABB Freelance 2000 system integrated with Honeywell FSC. This involves control & monitor of a field processing facility.
  • Integration of ABB AC800F controller with S800 I/O modules using Profibus protocol.
  • Involved in integration of Field Bus devices & HART devices with the ABB AC800F controllers.
  • Design of functional loops, logic using Functional Block Diagram, Instruction List, Sequential Flow Chart and graphics as per plant requirement.
  • Programming (development of drivers) of various user-defined interfaces such as Honeywell FSC, Net Oil computer with AC800F controller using MODBUS protocol.
  • Integration of various Freelance systems using Fiber optic link in TCP/IP protocol.
  • Development of interface software with AC800F DCS with FSC ESD system as per customer requirement.
Projects undertaken (in reverse chronological order)
Worked as an Project Engineer with ABB,India from June 1999 to August 2003,the world's pioneer in Industrial Automation.
1. Terminal Automation for LPG Truck Loading, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Dumad,India.(Jan 2003 to April 2003) :This transaction based batch process is designed for custody transfer of Liquified Petroleum Gas through Bulk Trucks. Objective is to synchronize data transfer among four important sub systems. TDM – Truck Data Module (SCO Unix server with Sybase Database) LRC – Load Rack Computer (Windows NT Server with Microsoft Cluster)Freelance Distributed Control System Danload Batch Controller Unit (Micro Controller).
TAS application software for multi-user environment is developed in Visual C++ using DCOM technology to act as a Transaction Server between TDM and Freelance DCS system.
Initial Data flows from customer commercial system to transaction server (LRC - Windows NT Advanced server) through TCP/IP Socket. Transaction server receives messages and keeps respective data in Oracle Database for further processing.
Truck driver’s movement is identified at every crucial position by means of unique touch cards. DCS System will poll card readers and passes card data to LRC through OPC server for validation.
Danload 6K Batch Controller Units are installed to supervise the loading operation in each bay. And they are linked with DCS over Modbus (RS485) protocol in Master-Slave architecture.
  • Involved in Integrating proximity card readers with DCS system and configuring OPC link with LRC.
  • Design & Implementation of Sequence logic (SFC) to interact simultaneously with OPC server and MODBUS slaves.
  • Developed PC based software by using MSCOMM32.OCX and opcda.dll to interact with Danload 6K BCU’s over serial port and to exchange data between ABB’s Freelance PLC controller and application using OPC technology.
  • Interface program is developed using Visual Basic 6.0 between Honeywell TPS DCS and ABB freelance DCS using Honeywell API calls and ABB OPC server.
  • Developed an application in Visual basic 6.0 by using Winsock to exchange data between Freelance PLC controllers with LRC application.
2. Offsite Automation,Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Guwahati, India.(Sep 2002 to Dec 2002) :This project involves offsite automation of storage tanks & control of LPG spheres using ABB AC460 controllers connected to field I/O’s using S100 & S800 I/O modules. Each Tank has Radar gauges, which are connected to the Remote Terminal unit, which in turn linked with DCS.
  • Development of process control software for Tank control on ABB’s Advant Distributed Control Systems .
  • Developed an algorithm in DCS to interface E&H RTU’s with DCS serially using Modbus protocol.
  • Configuration of Online History in Information Management System.
  • Design & Implementation of report in IMS (similar to crystal reports).
3. Automation of Field Processing Facility, Greater Nile Petroleum Corporation Limited, Sudan.(June 2002 to August 2002) :This involves ABB Freelance 2000 system integrated with HIMA ESD.This involves control & monitor of a field processing facility. Worked as a commissioning engineer during final stage. Specially deputed to attend final stage activates for Automation of Oil Gathering units.
  • Site support during commissioning & onsite training for operators & engineers.
  • Developed interface logic in Freelance controller to serially link Micro Motion Net Oil Computer using Modbus protocol and designed a logic to perform Well test remotely from DCS controller.
  • Developed Excel reports in Visual Basic 6.0 by using opcda.dll to exchange data between ABB’s Freelance 2000 controller and application using OPC technology.

Objective is to synchronize data transfer among four important sub systems. TDM – Truck Data Module (SCO Unix server with Sybase Database) LRC – Load Rack Computer (Windows 2000 Server with Microsoft Cluster) Freelance Distributed Control System Accuload Batch Controller Unit (Micro Controller).

  • Involved in Integrating of Stahl Card readers units, Accuload batch Controller Unit with DCS system and configuring OPC link with LRC.
  • Design & Implementation of an interface to control and monitor Limitorque Field Control Unit serially using Modbus protocol.
  • Design interface logic to monitor SAAB Radar Gauges serially using Modbus protocol.
  • Design & developed the Pump Sequence logic and Tank Operation logic.
  • Design & developed a Low level programming for Accuload Batch Control Unit using Accumate software.
5. Automation of Sugar Mill & Cogen Plant, Arunchalam Sugar Mills, India.(June 2000 to April 2001) :This project involves automation of a Cogen plant and Sugar plant. The Cogen plant consists of three Turbines and a Boiler and the raw material for this plant is Baggase from the sugar plant. The control system provided is Freelance system with 5 controllers of which three for Co gen and two for sugar.
  • Design of P&ID, selection of instruments and development of control logic for the Sugar mill as per plant requirement.
  • Development of necessary control logic and third party devices interface for automation of Cogen plants .
  • Interface of ABB VFD’s with the Freelance controllers using Modbus RTU.
  • On-Site system staging, testing, on-site commissioning, troubleshooting, customer support and final hand over of systems to the customer.
6. Project: Mathura Refinery Revamp Project, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Mathura, India.(June 1999 to May 2000) :This project involves automation of AVU, VBU, Merox, Co-Boiler areas in the refinery. The automation is done using ABB AC460 controllers and the plant shutdown ESD is by TMR August PLC.
  • Design & Development of process control software for the refinery units on ABB’s Advant Distributed Control Systems AC460.
  • Implementation of safety logic on ABB’s August Trimodular Redundant PLC and integrated serially with ABB AC460 controllers.
  • On-Site system staging, testing, on-site commissioning, troubleshooting, customer support and final hand over of systems to the customer.
